  • Lisa Hitchen – for her PB at Bradford 5k (28:39) and for plugging away at going sub 30 minutes only to go sub 29 a couple of weeks later!
  • Megan Begley – for 5 successive Park Run PBs between mid August and mid October, starting with a very creditable 21.44 in her first Park Run, achieving a massively impressive 20.35 in October, and her infectious enthusiasm for training.
  • Sam Black – An example to both older and younger runners, he seems to be having a renaissance
  • Liz Willis for her time of 4:11 at the Yorkshire Marathon – making her third fastest in the all time Abbey performance league table in her age category.

September 2015 – Craig Kent for incredible and consistent improvement since joining the club, culminating in successive half marathon PBs at GNR and Vale of YorkAlso Nominated:

August 2015 – Jasmine Salih for completing her 100th parkrun and, since qualifying as a LIRF, she has been working hard to bring a bit of structure to Tuesday night training by recceing new running routes, introducing a little speed work for the ‘steadier’ runners, etcAlso Nominated:

  • Jane Oughton for focused training and improvement, running the York 10k in 58:45, her first sub-60
  • Luke Wray-Rogers who continues to improve through his hard work in training
July 2015 – Abbey Juniors Washburn relay team – it was their 1st race and they came in
6th out of 15 against very good opposition from seasoned junior runners including girls with very
long legs so twice the size of a couple of our runners. They did really well and deserve recognition
from club members who aren’t connected/involved with the juniors.

June 2015 – Michaela Clark – for significant improvement over the last few months (doing well on the Baildon Boundary Way), and ran an impressive 49:16 at Bendrigg 10k, and was a counter towards the Vets prize we won there.Also Nominated:

  • Helen Roden – for doing a brilliant job with the Juniors on a Monday night. 
  • Mike and Alison Smith for their latest in their series of extreme 2015 challenges
  • Hillary Tucker – for representing our club on all surfaces including fell.

  • Stephen Greene – for both his performance at Otley 10 (1:11:33) and Beddrigg 10k (42:21).

May 2015 – Emma Goodall for running her very first 10k race at the Apperley bridge canter in a very creditable 1:11, she also finished 4th in the club 5k handicapAlso Nominated:

  • Martin Jones for his 22 mile 3000 foot Malhamdale Trail in poor weather with a time of 3.58 followed up a few days later by the Jack Bloor.
April 2015 – Chris Mac was awarded runner of the month for April for completing the London Marathon in 3:02, a whopping 26 mins off his previous PB at Berlin last year and then generously thanking Abbey Runners for helping him achieve thatAlso Nominated:

  • Graeme Littlewood for his sprint finish at the end of the Meanwood Trail Race which was truly inspiring. It embodied what we should be all trying to achieve when we run.
  • Sarah Dobson for coming 3rd in her first race in Abbey colours and being an enthusiastic member of the club in the short time she’s been a member.
  • A joint nomination for Mike Smith and June Wicks for the work, effort and enthusiasm that they have put into developing and leading our new beginners programme. Their work is a credit to both themselves and the club.
  • Michaela Clark for doing Baildon boundary half in 1.59.27 … 12th in her category. She ran this race about 15 years ago in 1.59.00 so after that amount of time only 27secs slower.
March 2015 – Joint award to Richard Gaffey and John Ward. Richard was nominated for running so well for the club at the PECO XC races, and for his 1:00:14 time at Thirsk 10. John was nominated for setting a club age-group best time of 1:12:01 at Thirsk 10.Also Nominated:

January 2015 – Nick Rank for knocking 4 1⁄2 minutes off his HM PB at the Brass Monkey and for being a regular and encouraging member at Thursday night training.Also Nominated:

  • Andy Wicks for knocking 3 ½ minutes off his HM PB at the Brass Monkey and for coming back so strongly after being injured for so much of 2014.
  • Helen Nurse for being 4th Abbey counter in the January Peco XC at West Park. A good team member having completed all 3 Peco XCs so far this season and also running all 4 of the West Yorks XCs.
  • Jane Oughton – for getting back to a sub 30 min Park Run after a difficult year of injury and for her ongoing commitment to wearing the Abbey vest in far flung corners of the UK.

December 2014 – Iain Manfield For his support given to all Abbeys, regardless of speed, at the recent PECO Races. At Pendas Field, half an hour after his finish time Iain was at the bottom of the last hill shouting out  great words of encouragement to the last few Abbeys so they could put in a last effort to run to the finish line. This  was repeated at Race 2 and 3. Having a ‘fast’ Abbey supporting the final few is much appreciated and makes all feel part of the Abbey Runners team.Also Nominated Carolyn Dewhirst

October 2014 – Two Winners this Month:

David Nahal – for his 3.26 PB at the Yorkshire Marathon

Ian Patchett – for his encouragement to a fellow competitor at the Horsforth 10K, which resulted in an email being sent to the club, the content of which is copied below.  An excellent role model for what running in Abbey colours should be about!
“Hi my name is Thomas King. I was born and raised in Horsforth but have lived in Liverpool for the last 10 years and race for a Liverpool based running team called the Penny Lane Striders. I came home to Leeds to do the Horsforth 10K today. During the last km of the race I was ready to take my foot off the gas but one of your members really motivated me and told me to tuck in behind him, he really kept me going and lead me to fairly decent finish time.  I wanted to thank him after the race but could not see him – I have looked at the results and think his name could be Ian Patchett. Could you pas my thanks onto him. Cheers X”

Nominated for having a great run at the 17m Pendle Fell Race, a real tough one
(finishing 74th in 2:48:38), and also backing up the next day at the Temple Newsam PECO x/c, being the
6th Abbey counter and 87th overall

August – 2013 – Karen Garvican – Nominated – for her time of 18:59 at the Abbey Parkrun – which makes her the
fastest Abbey lady in Parkrun history, and makes her only the second Abbey lady ever to go sub 19 minutes for a 5k.

She has also become a key member of the Thursday speed session group, with an inspirational “can do” attitude

July – 2013 – Andy Wicks – Nominated for PB at the Jane Tomlinson Leeds 10k in 41.54, followed by a time only 6 seconds slower at the undulating Harrogate 10k the following weekend

Nominated for her stunning first time ever marathon performance of 4 hours 11 mins at the Edinburgh Marathon.

Also nominated were Sharon Woodruff (3rd lady finisher at the Wharfedale Half), Jenny Beasley (superb PB busting run at the Leeds Half) and Phil Livermore (4th place at the Ripon 10 and strong performances at the Abbey Anniversary Fell Race and the Jack Bloor Fell Race).

Nominated for ‘crashing’ through the magical 4 hour barrier at this years 3 Peaks in a time of
3 hours 56 minutes, an improvement on last years time by 27 minutes..

Richard was nominated by 3 members for his great Chester marathon run in a time of 2.56;22.

Jeremy was nominated for some great race performances including a 3rd at the Horsfoth 10K in a time of 35.17

August 2011 – Jim Whittaker

was nominated because he has progressed well from running at the front of the back of the pack, to running at the back of the front of the pack. He did a great Golden Mile run of 6:01.


July 2011 – Mark Hetherington  and Bruce Hetherington were joint winners

Mark was nominated for organising the Eccup 10, Golden Acre Relay and the timed (magic) mile at the track. All have been really well organised and Mark has worked tirelessly making these events run so smoothly.

Bruce was nominated for being a veteran of 69 Park Runs over the years, Bruce is an omnipresent and supportive member of Uncle Peter running group, and a thoroughly nice chap. (I am looking for a photo of Bruce).

June 2011 – Alex Grant – Alex was nominated for his win at the Great Langdale Trail “20k” in his first race after coming back from injury.

May 2011 – Iain Manfield was nominated for winning the John Carr MV40 overall category. He was also 2nd MV40 in the PECOs and has been a valuable team counter in the PECOs for the past few years.

April 2011 – Sheelagh Ratcliffe

Two nominations – ‘for her three times successful run at the Three Peaks, carried out in her typically understated fashion. It’s a tough race and she’s done it every time with admirable determination, encouraging me and others in the process’. and ‘for yet another no fuss, no bother completion of the Three Peaks fell race on a day when 89 runners failed to complete the course’.

March 2011 – Phil Hammond

Nominate for racing every weekend in March, setting a string of PBs (at 10 miles, half marathon and 20 miles) and for submitting regular race reports for the club newsletter.

Getting so many Abbies into the Lakes to go running in the middle of the night and in driving rain after sleeping in a marsh. A great test of running, and we couldn’t’t have done it without someone getting us to do it together.

2 nominations for her huge improvements and her PBs.
She has consistently improved her 5K times at the Hyde Park Time Trials, set a new 3K PB at the track, turned in a hugely improved performance at the Woodkirk XC (27th this year, compared to 52nd last year) and, most impressively of all, knocked 2 min’s off her 10K PB at the Abbey Dash.

August – Andrew Wilson

4 nominations were received for Andrew. He displayed true club spirit standing in at the last minute in the Leeds Country Way Relay, ensuring that we had a complete Men’s B team.


July – Alex Grant

Nominated for finishing 6th (2nd MV40+) in the James Herriot club trip race. Also winning the first leg of the Washburn Valley Relay. And for his hard work organising the Eccup 10.

June – John Brooksbank

Nominated for his Vets 50+ third place at the Blaydon Race. Beating some high class north-eastern club runners in the process. He also stepped in at short notice to captain the men’s team in the Bradford Millennium Way Relay.


May – Louise Oldridge AND Seb Sillito

Nominated for performances at both the Leeds 1/2 Marathon and the Meanwood Valley Trail Race.

April – Andy May

Nominated for his performance at the Rotterdam Marathon where he did a time of 3:16:03 in very hot conditions and for supporting the Abbey Runners at the London Marathon.

Nominated (by 2 members) for her performance at the Wakefield 10K, where she was first LV35 (out of 88 finishers in this category).
