Summer of Relays 2016

Every year, Abbey Runners puts in teams to various local relay races. We are focusing on three key races

  • Danefield – Tuesday 5th July 2016 – Danefield Park, East Chevin Rd, Otley.  3 x 3 mile Relay. Well defined tracks and bridle paths with some climbs and descents. Estimated lap time 20-25 minutes. £9.00 per team of 3, mens, women, mixed and vets
  • Washburn Valley – Friday 15th July – Fewston and Swinsty reservoirs north of Otley. Three different legs averaging approximately 3.75 miles each and takes place on public footpaths, bridleways and a small amount of road in the scenic Washburn Valley.
  • Leeds Country Way (link currently still to 2015) – Sunday 4th September.  The Leeds Country Way Relay Race is a 64 mile circular relay race which uses the series of footpaths, bridle paths and roads around the actual Leeds Country Way route.

We’d like to get as many Abbeys out to these races and put as many teams in as possible. If you’re interested, don’t delay and let your captains know

If you are interested, please let the Captains know – Duncan Clark or Jasmine Salih

Duncan and Jasmine can give you further information on these races or speak to your club mates next time you’re training with them.

  1. Detailed race information is now available on the League web site (follow this link:
  2. We are expecting a bumper turnout, so please get there early to beat the queues at registration
  3. Car share wherever possible to ease the overcrowding in the car parks
  4. Consider your choice of footwear as it will be very muddy in places, but with some hard packed sections
  5. You should only join the registration queue once you are in possession of your bib tag (race number): if you have not collected this before the day of the race, you should find Duncan Clark or Jasmine Salih BEFORE attempting to register.
  6. The deadline for registering ‘counting’ runners for Race 1 has now passed: any club members who are not already registered will have to run as ‘Guests’.
  7. Following consultation with Northern Athletics, Year 2 and Year 3 children are allowed to run in the 1 mile Junior races, PROVIDED that their parent / guardian / coach is happy that they have the experience and maturity to cope with the distance, nature of the terrain and the competitive nature of the event. There will not be a separate age category for these children; they will effectively be ‘guests’ in the Year 4 – 6 age category (although they will be eligible for series prizes if they are good enough!)
  8. Remember your £3 entry fee
