Kilians Classic Trail Race, Pyrenees
I was looking to do another race in the Pyreneees, similar to the Olla Nuria fell race I did a couple of year ago.
I was still out in Australia last November when Sharon found this particular race, and after a few Facebook messages back and forth between us I was certain I wanted to do it. Along with John F and Jason we started making plans for our July date, booking flights, trains, accommodation and writing bogus medical certificates!!
The race started from Font Romeu, high up in the Pyrenees on the French side, famous as an altitude training base for British athletes. I think Paula Radcliffe still has a house there (Dave Gillian will probably know, might even have been round, private joke!)
John and I had a base in Limoux for 2 days before we started our 5 trains in one day journey to get to race HQ. Limoux-Carcassonne-Narbonne-Perpignan-Villefranche and finally up to Font Romeu.
As well as being ‘ team Abbey’ we were, along with 2 others ‘team GB’ as well.
An extremely well-organised affair, it was supposed to be 25km but ended up being 17 mile! I still work in miles but I know we ended up with 2 ‘bonus miles’. Extremely hot, even though we started early morning. 7000ft up to start with and we climbed a bit further too! We all had a good race, I’ve mislaid the results, but I did four and a half hours and John, Jason and Sharon were around the four hour mark.
