It really is a cracker of a race, you do your climbing early on and then you are rewarded with some classic limestone scenery, including the Norber Erratics (not Erotics, madam!) these are boulders left when the glaciers retreated in the last Ice Age for all you Abbey members interested in Geology. Plenty of limestone pavement to dodge and weave through (clints and grikes I think they are called) and also some tussocky sections which did my dodgy ankle (I sprained it a few week ago) no favours. You do get a good, long sweeping downhill section near the end though.
Myself and John followed our usual modus operandi for getting to the race, that is a train to Settle and then a 4 mile hike over Giggleswick Scar into Austwick.
By the end of the race it was chucking it down so we were glad of a lift from Stella back into Settle and to a really good cafe-bar in town for post-race rehydration. Real Ales and Tamla Motown on the music system, you can’t go wrong!
Its a relatively low-key race, having said that, it attracted 164 runners.
