Some of you may,or may not, know that I do some occasional work for a company called West Yorkshire Sport who are based in Leeds. They were responsible for the organisation of this event and asked me if I would like to be involved with it.
Held at Leeds Met.Uni. Beckett Park Campus, my day started at 8am with an hour of ‘traffic management marshalling; i.e. getting loads of mini-buses parked up and ushering lots of excitable kids into the registration hall and then on to the Opening Ceremony. It was a freezing cold morning and so I was a happy bunny when I was informed I had got an ‘indoor job’ for the rest of the day. I was to assist two fellow UKA coaches in ‘Sports Hall Athletics and Disability Sports’ which is what I qualified in with WYS. Basically it is track and field events with slight variations for the indoors and disabled people, such as using foam javelins.
A hectic, but very enjoyable and rewarding day it was. Also good to meet up with a friend of mine, Graeme Woodward, who is the Fell Runners Association Coaching ‘guru’. If anyone wants to get involved with WYS or fancies doing a fell running coaching course give me a shout and I’ll point you in the right direction.
