Representatives of Abbey Runners will be joining some of Yorkshire’s well-known sporting names at the ‘Be Inspired, Get Involved’ launch at 6.00pm at Lawnswood School on the 28th of November.

The London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games created an incredible ‘summer of sport’ that has created fresh enthusiasm for sport to people of all ages and of all abilities.  Now we need to build a lasting legacy, not only nationally, but here in our local communities. It is crucial to seize the moment and channel all this enthusiasm to inspire sporting stars of the future and getting as many people as possible get involved with playing or assisting with local sport and recreational activities.

So come along and meet Abbey Runners in the flesh and find out what joining a running club can do for you.  For more information see:

Sunday 26th May 2013

A few Abbeys have entered the Edinburgh Marathon, and being sociable types we’d like more of you to join us.

Edinburgh is one of the flattest marathons around (in fact, it’s a net downhill course) and was voted the fastest marathon in the UK by Runners World in 2008. So even if you are a serial marathon runner, this is a crucial PB opportunity. There is also a half marathon on the same day so even if you think a marathon is not for you but you fancy a weekend in Edinburgh then come along!

The weekend falls over a Bank Holiday so we were thinking of travelling up on the Saturday and staying at least a couple of nights, so we can celebrate on the Sunday night and enjoy the city!

Entries are now open and you can enter at If you are entering, let Jim know because around February time we’ll start a marathon training programme.

The marathon route goes from Interlaken to Kleine Scheidegg, via Lauterbrunnen, Wengen and the moraine of the Eiger glacier. It gains 1,829 metres of altitude along the way, with almost all of that climbing being in the second half. This year was the race’s 20th anniversary, and the event was also this year’s Long Distance Mountain Running World Championship race, both facts which meant that this was a much bigger event than I realised before I arrived.

Abbey Runners have secured 3 club entries for the 2013 London Marathon. If you applied for the London Marathon and did not get a place then you may be eligible for one of the three club places. The full rules for eligibility are attached, but the main factors are that you must have evidence that you entered and were rejected (e.g. rejection letter/email), that you must have been a member of Abbey Runners for 12 months and that you have paid your subs for this year.

The places will be allocated by ballot in the bar on Tuesday November 20th after the club run. So to enter the Abbey ballot, please get your proof of rejection to Peter Leach by Tuesday November 20th.

This year we will be celebrating the winter solstice with a run up Pen y Ghent and Plover Hill on the afternoon of Sunday 23rd December. The aim being to see sunset over Ingleborough from the top of Plover Hill followed by a pint in the Crown at Horton or a proper tea at the Golden Lion in Settle depending on what folk want to do. Open to all runners, fell or otherwise. The route isn’t particularly technical so suitable for novices who would like to take part in this annual Abbey event. This year there will be no sacrifice of virgins on the tops unless anyone is volunteering, but we could light a beacon. Contact Mike Ayers (Fell Secretary) if interested.
